MOROCC'N'ROLL

WHAT IS MOROCCNROLL?

It’s a little bit of “MA” + “ROCK ’N’ ROLL” and a little bit of “MOROCCO” + “ROLL”.

But more than anything, it’s a 1000-kilometre adventure ride through Morocco.

The origins of “Marokenrols” go back to 2012, and historically, the trip was done with the legendary Mercedes Benz W123 cars (models from 1975–1985). While they were famously durable and “almost” never broke down, during Moroccnroll they somehow almost always did.

The cars often wouldn’t start, and participants had to push-start their own Mercedes before each journey. Headlights would fail at the worst possible times – usually at night – and everyone had to wear headlamps and hope for the best. Sometimes the fuel tank leaked, and the car interiors were permanently filled with the smell of petrol or diesel. Other times, the exhaust pipe would fall off, and suddenly it felt like you were driving a tank, not an S-Class Mercedes.

It was tragic. It was hilarious.
A full week of tragicomedy.

That was back then. Today, we’ve removed the tragic part – and ride only in new cars/minibuses.

But we’ve completely kept the comedic essence – the adventure plan, the wild route, the people we meet, and the homes we stay in along the way.

Join us and live the experience!

ADVENTURE PLAN

DAY 1 | ARRIVAL: MARRAKECH

Arrival in Morocco. Transfer from the airport to the hotel located in the very heart of the old town. Free time with the opportunity to see and explore Africa’s most popular city with your own eyes. Overnight in Marrakech.

DAY 2 | MARRAKECH

Breakfast is served. We set out to explore Marrakech, also known as the “Red City.” Marrakech is one of the country’s most important cities, a former capital that is still considered a symbol of Morocco.

It is the fourth largest city and possibly the most significant former imperial capital of Morocco. The city includes the ancient fortified old town (medina) and its surrounding modern suburbs. The old city walls are built from local reddish-orange clay and lime, which is why Marrakech is called the “Red City.”

Here you’ll find Morocco’s largest traditional Berber market. The cityscape wouldn’t be complete without merchants, snake charmers, acrobats, jugglers, street musicians, monkey trainers, storytellers, pickpockets, and jesters in medieval costumes.

Today, Marrakech is one of the main tourist destinations and one of the liveliest cities not only in Morocco but throughout Africa.

At the end of the day, after exploring the city thoroughly, we’ll enjoy our first group dinner right at the main square. Overnight in Marrakech. [B, D]

DAY 3 | MARRAKECH - IMLIL (~70km; ~1.5h)

Breakfast is served in Marrakech. We set off towards the High Atlas Mountains, to one of Morocco’s natural gems – Toubkal National Park. Our adventure for the day begins in the small mountain village of Imlil (1700 m above sea level).

Imlil is a small but quite famous village among mountain climbers, as it is traditionally the starting point for the ascent to Jebel Toubkal (4167 m), the highest peak in Morocco and all of North Africa. Although climbing Toubkal is not planned as part of this adventure, we will fully enjoy all the wonders that this national park has to offer.

The approximately 4-hour trek through the magical Atlas Mountains, with endlessly captivating views combined with the fresh and sometimes intoxicating mountain air, will work its magic—guaranteeing a sleep sweeter than sweet. But before that, of course, we will enjoy delicious traditional dinner with our Berber friends right there in the mountains. Overnight in Imlil. [B, D]

DAY 4 | IMLIL - TIZI N’TICHKA - AIT BENHADDOU (~235km; ~4h)

We have breakfast and head to Ait Benhaddou. Today our route winds over the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2207 m above sea level). For many years, this was the country’s main trade route, connecting Marrakech with the Sahara Desert, traveled only by camel caravans. In 1936, the French army built an asphalt road, making Tizi n’Tichka the highest paved mountain pass not only in Morocco but in all of North Africa.

Ait Benhaddou is a typical village (ksar) characteristic of this Sahara region. The village is considered one of Morocco’s finest examples of earthen architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.

Locally, Ait Benhaddou is also called Morocco’s Hollywood, as countless films have been shot here, including many Hollywood blockbusters such as The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones, and more.

We take a leisurely tour and easy walk through the ancient village, followed by a communal dinner and a peaceful evening. Overnight in Ait Benhaddou. [B, D]

DAY 5 | AIT BENHADDOU - TODGHA GORGE - TINGHIR (~200km; ~4h)

Breakfast in Ait Benhaddou, then we head to Todgha Gorge, another natural wonder of Morocco – a massive canyon carved by a rapid mountain river many years ago. The canyon stretches 24 km, with walls reaching up to 400 meters high in some places. The most breathtaking views are found in the last 600 meters of the gorge, where the width narrows to just 10 meters, and the walls tower 160 meters high on both sides.

Todgha Gorge is located very close to Tinghir, home to our dear friends – a vibrant Berber family with whom we will stay overnight.

Here you will have a unique chance to experience true Moroccan family hospitality (this family is very different from our friends in Imlil). In Tinghir, they will host us with food, lodging, and a lively Berber party and festival. This night will be unforgettable. Of course, there’s no luxury, but the vibrant atmosphere cannot be matched by any 5-star hotel. Overnight in Tinghir. [B, D]

DAY 6 | TINGHIR - MERZOUGA - ERG CHEBBI (~200km; ~4h)

Breakfast and farewells to our Berber friends. We continue our journey towards the world’s largest desert, Merzouga, where we will arrive this evening. In Merzouga, we will swap our vehicles for camels and enjoy a roughly 1.5-hour ride through the Sahara Desert.

We will witness with our own eyes the largest sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara – Erg Chebbi (the very dunes once famous as Windows Screensaver images). Overnight at a hotel in Merzouga, located right by the dunes – practically in the desert. [B, D]

DAY 7| ERG CHEBBI - MERZOUGA - OUARZAZATE (~370km; ~7h)

Leisurely breakfast with a view of the legendary Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast, you’ll have the chance to experience the magic of the Sahara sands once again—whether by trying some sports activities, climbing the highest dune, or simply relaxing in the warm sand, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the moment.

Around midday, we’ll gather up the Sahara sands, freshen up with showers, and begin our journey back to Ouarzazate. This will be a long but beautiful drive along the very edge of the desert. In Ouarzazate, we’ll enjoy our farewell dinner. Overnight stay in Ouarzazate. [B, D]

DAY 8| DEPARTURE DAY: OUARZAZATE

Final breakfast. Transfer to the airport. [B]
The letters in brackets [ ] indicate the included meals for that specific day: B – breakfast, D – dinner.

ACCOMMODATION

The first two nights are spent in the Toubkal National Park, in the small mountain village of Aroumd, located at 1900 meters above sea level. Accommodation is in a standard Moroccan mountain guesthouse. The toilet and shower facilities are outside the rooms, shared within the guesthouse. Hot water is available in the shower.

The third night is in a traditional guesthouse in the town of Ait Benhaddou. Rooms include a private toilet and shower with hot water.

The fourth night is spent at the home of our friends — a genuine Berber family in Tinghir. This is a traditional Moroccan house where a large Berber family lives daily. Participants stay two per room, with double beds. Please note that sometimes these rooms might be fully occupied. In such cases, participants will sleep in the large living room (a Moroccan salon), where sofas line the walls around the room. The toilet is outside the house, and there is a very basic shower. Hot water here is rare.

The fifth and sixth nights are spent in traditional nomad tents (~3m x ~5m; ~2.5m high) with views of the large sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. Although from the outside they appear as simple, region-typical nomad tents, inside each tent there are multiple beds set up, a separated toilet, and a shower with hot water.

The seventh night is in Ouarzazate, in traditional yet modern apartments. Each apartment includes 1–2 bedrooms, a living room (salon), toilet, and shower with hot water.

All accommodations have electricity, allowing you to charge your electronic devices. Rooms are shared, generally 2–4 people per room, depending on the group, situation, and guesthouse availability. Couples (or those who sign up together in pairs or threes) are almost always offered the possibility to share a room. Solo travelers should expect to share a room with another participant who is also traveling alone.

FOOD

One of the inseparable parts of Moroccan culture is its cuisine. Some say it is very diverse. Others say—not so much. However, everyone agrees that it is delicious and healthy, as it is primarily based on local vegetables and fruits, as well as meat and fish, which are available here all year round.

During the week, participants will have the opportunity to taste practically all the traditional dishes of this Moroccan region. Starting from countless varieties of tagine, to couscous (both for meat-eaters and vegetarians). And, of course, those who eat meat will appreciate the grilled turkey, chicken, or beef, which tastes heavenly here in Morocco.

Every day (except for the arrival and departure days), we will have two shared meals—traditional Moroccan breakfast and dinner. Usually, that is enough for everyone. Due to the tight Marokenrol schedule, there is no time allocated for full sit-down lunches.

Participants who need lunch will have to arrange it themselves by buying food and snacks at shops to eat in the car, or take along on trekking or excursions. Usually, Marokenrol’s favorite snacks are fruits and vegetables—they are healthy and tasty.

In the adventure plan, the meals included in the program each day are indicated in brackets: B – breakfast, D – dinner.

TRANSPORT

Nowadays, to ensure the adventure is safe and enjoyable, we use only new and reliable vehicles- comfortable cars and minibuses. However, we have preserved the essentials: the thrilling route, the feeling of freedom, unexpected events, and the people who make the journey unforgettable.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

We make sure your adventure’s start and finish are as smooth as the journey itself. The trip begins in Marrakech — a vibrant, colorful city buzzing with energy where the excitement starts from day one. The journey concludes in Ouarzazate — a peaceful oasis at the gateway to the Sahara, where you can let everything you’ve experienced settle and prepare for your journey home.

You can book your flight to Morocco yourself or, if you prefer, we’re happy to help with recommendations for the best connections. Once you arrive, we’ll welcome you in Marrakech and take you to the starting point. At the end of the trip in Ouarzazate, we’ll assist with transfers to the airport or your next destination.

All you need to do is show up, relax, and let Moroccnroll take over.

European citizens do not need a visa to travel to Morocco. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned end date of your trip. Holders of non-citizen passports require a visa to enter Morocco!

No special vaccinations are required before traveling to Morocco.

The national currency is the Moroccan Dirham. There are two ways to obtain it:

1. Bring cash in EUR, USD, or GBP and exchange it locally for Moroccan Dirhams (there are plenty of exchange offices available).

2. Use your VISA or MASTERCARD bank card to withdraw cash from ATMs (note: payment by card is generally not accepted).

It is not recommended to buy or exchange Moroccan Dirhams outside of Morocco!
